So lately, I kind of got tired of playing another “grindy” game, where all you do is to repetitively kill certain enemies to get levels and items. After playing years of RPGs and MMORPGs, I figured a change of pace is definitely needed. That’s when I came upon this little gem.
Fundamentally, Bar Oasis is relatively straight-forward story game with a big feature: You get to make cocktails!! Essentially, you are a newly hired bartender who makes a huge variety of drinks for new customers and bar regulars in between the story. Now THAT’s a game you don’t see everyday.
Now let me get right into the review.
First of all, the game is simple, relatively linearly and has only a few “forks in the road”. However, the story is definitely rock solid, and the main characters are charming and believable. In fact, even the nitpicky character like Mr. Robinson can be quite charming once you get to know him. In addition, because the story is dating-sim type, it is very important that the female characters are appealing to the player. For that, Bar Oasis portrays them with great taste.
The experience is further amplified with great use of soundtracks. The brilliant jazz and piano music brings the player deeper into the bar atmosphere. In fact, I have downloaded the soundtrack off YouTube. It was just that good.
Finally, I seriously can’t talk about Bar Oasis without the great selection of liquor and recipes. The alcohol brands are well-known, such as Smirnoff vodka and Barcardi rum. In other words, whatever booze are on the shelf, it is very likely that you can buy it from a liquor store. Now this game also comes with a huge amount of recipes, anything from a Black Russian, to a Martini, to a Screwdriver, and even Blue Hawaii.
To make it even more impressive, each recipe provides a step-to-step guide on how to make the drink. This means that not only did you bought a game, you also bought yourself a COCKTAIL RECIPE APP at the same time!! Did I also mention that this whole package is totally FREE?!
So all in all, I can’t find a single fault against this game. If you like a change of pace, great gaming experience, and delectable cocktail recipes to boot, this is the one for you. Just as a side note, I have never drink alcohol in my entire 25 years. This game makes me feel like trying a few samples. Conclusion: Amaretto smells wonderful, but tastes a bit like cough syrup…
